Press release: Czech firm Umbrella Mobility penetrates the city and commuter transportation market in Germany
The Czech firm Umbrella Mobility, one of German carrier FlixBus’s most important partners in Europe, has successfully expanded its activities into the segment of city and commuter transportation. In the second half of 2019, it started operating city and commuter transportation in Hamburg.
“Within FlixBus, Umbrella is among the top three carriers worldwide in terms of size. Every year, we travel about 25 million kilometres. Hence, it is logical for the representatives of various cities to contact us to ask whether we would be capable of organising city and commuter transportation as well. We are well-established in Hamburg, were we’ve been running the German division of Umbrella for some years and have our own operation facilities. So when the representatives of Hamburg contacted us, after due consideration we replied that we were definitely capable,” explains Pavel Steiner, founder and CEO of Umbrella Mobility.
There are currently 18 Mercedes-Benz and MAN buses with the Umbrella logo operating in Hamburg and its suburban areas as a part of the city’s comprehensive mobility system. “In the course of February and March 2020, we will add 8 more buses of the same brands. As of December 2020, our services in Hamburg should have approximately doubled, and in the coming years we should continue to increase the volume of kilometres serviced within city and suburban mobility. From 2022, we should also start using purely electric buses,” specifies Pavel Steiner.
Umbrella Mobility thus followed up on two years of providing substitute bus transportation in Hamburg and the area, deploying its buses during planned or unexpected outages in railway transportation. Umbrella also currently operates substitute bus transportation in Berlin. In the course of 2020, it will start providing city and commuter transportation in Berlin, and from 2021 also in Munich. Last year alone, Umbrella had to purchase and start operating minimally 54 buses intended for city and suburban transportation.
The Prague-based company Umbrella Mobility, which found a strategic financial partner in the RSBC investment group in early 2020, is currently one of Central Europe’s largest carriers - it has branches in Copenhagen, Hamburg, Berlin and Munich, and is planning to open more in Paris and Amsterdam this year. It is also one of the largest partners of FlixBus in Europe, operating 5400 connections in 19 countries and linking more than 500 destinations in cooperation with this German company. It is also involved in the rental of luxury buses for tour and incoming transportation and provides turnkey travel services and boat and yacht rentals. Umbrella Mobility overarches four brands – Umbrella Coach&Buses, Umbrella City Lines, Umbrella Holiday and Umbrella Yacht. It employs more than 400 people in the Czech Republic and Germany, and its annual turnover exceeds CZK 1 billion.
